A Stitch in Time

Textile Conservation
At FIT, students are given the unique opportunity to work with professional conservation labs as part of our training. Valerie Soll and Marlene Eidelheit, of the Conservation Laboratory at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine ran courses in dye-to-match yarns and in the wet cleaning and repair of tapestries, respectively.

Ethics and Fiber Identification:

This treatment was a first-semester advanced conservation short-term project. The purpose was to introduce the ethics and practice of re-warping and re-weaving.
This is also an excellent example of the role polarized light microscopy can play in fiber identification - without careful analysis under a microscope, the mohair could have easily been missed!
The project was completed in several class meetings and individual sessions over the course of four weeks in October and November 2015.
